SPRINGFIELD, Va. – Myrna Lenora Hanson, 89, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Alexandria, Va., after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. She was born July 22, 1918, in Oceanville. She was the last surviving child of John G. and Cora E. (McDonald) Davis’ eight children. She grew up and was educated on Deer Isle, graduating from Deer Isle High School. After graduation, she left Maine to seek employment in Hartford, Conn., where she met and married George L. Hanson, in 1943 before moving to Concord, N.H. After a brief two-year move to Florida, the family moved back to Maine, residing for many years in Bangor and Hampden. While in Bangor, she was employed at the Bangor Daily News, working in the classified and advertising departments for more than 25 years, retiring in 1980. During the time she was employed, she actively kept up with her children’s Little League and figure skating activities as well as her involvement with the news’ annual Soap Box Derby. After retiring, she loved spending the summers at the family camp in Hancock where she kept a close eye on her humming birds and chipmunks. An avid Red Sox fan, she will be remembered not only for her love of knitting sweaters, scarves and mittens for her children and grandchildren, but also for her never ending enjoyment of doing those Word Find puzzle books and watching her favorite golfer, Tiger Woods. Myrna was predeceased by her husband, George, in 2001; and a daughter, Janice Marie, in 1953. She is survived by two daughters, Carlene Toole and her husband, Terry, of Bangor; Carole Ann McGinn and her husband, Mac, of Frederick, Md.; and a son, Wayne George Hanson and his wife, Ann, of Springfield, Va., whom she lived with for the last several years; as well as nine grandchildren and 15 great-grand-children. As was her request, there will be no formal services. Burial will be next to her husband and daughter, in Sunshine, at a later date.
