DEER ISLE – Myrtle Etta Greenlaw, 93, passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle. She was born June 23, 1912, in Deer Isle, the daughter of Harry C. and Agnes (Barbour) Greenlaw. Myrtle graduated from McKinley High School, Class of 1932 and graduated from Maine State Teachers College. She taught school for many years in Deer Isle, Stonington, Isle Au Haut and Northport. She worked summers doing various household jobs for summer residents of North Haven and Deer Isle. Her heritage was very important to her, as she was proud to be a descendant of some of the early settlers of Deer Isle. She has spent her last days as a residential patient at the Island Nursing Home. Myrtle was a member of the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle, where she sang in the church choir for many years and served as a deaconess and was a member of the Ladie’s Aid. She was a member of Grange No. 296 in Deer Isle. Myrtle was awarded several citations including recognition from her church and the State of Maine for her many hours of service to shut-ins and people with many needs. Myrtle is survived by her niece, Norma (Greenlaw) Nevells of Stratford, Conn.; great-niece, Susan (Nevells) Bitetto of New Hampshire; and great-nephews, John Greenlaw of Virginia, Joseph Greenlaw of Pennsylvania and Edward and Alan Nevells of Connecticut. She is also survived by one great-great-niece and five great-great-nephews. Myrtle was predeceased by her parents, a brother, Norman Greenlaw and his wife, Gwenith; and a nephew, Norwood Greenlaw. She will be missed by many cousins and friends. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Stonington. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle, officiated by the Rev. Alice Hildebrand. Graveside services will follow at Mount Adams Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Island Nursing Home, Island Memorial Ambulance Fund or the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle.
