WATERVILLE – Naomi Mitchell White, 75, of Lakeworth, Fla., died in Waterville, Feb. 16, 2004, after a lengthy illness. She was born March 5, 1928, in Island Falls, one of 11 children of Ferdie and Grace (Wilkins) Mitchell. Naomi was a graduate of Island Falls High School. On Oct. 19, 1946, Naomi married Vaughn H. White and they resided in Patten until his death in 1979. Before retiring to Florida, she was very active in the Patten community and received the Jefferson Award for outstanding community service. She was also an active member of the Patten Rebekah Lodge. Naomi was employed by the State of Maine and Penquis CAP where she was instrumental in establishing the Katahdin Valley Health Center in Patten where she served as its first administrator. Naomi is survived by her son, Casey White and wife, Linda, of Smyrna Mills; her daughter, Charlotte Melnichok and husband, Thomas, of Oakland and Jayne Baxley and husband, Chris, of Blounstown, Fla.; sister, Helen Sherman of Island Falls; two brothers, Kenneth Mitchell and wife, Helen, of Hamden, Conn., and Philip Mitchell and wife, Betty, of Orchard Park, N.Y.; her special grandchildren, Christopher and wife, Trish, Jessie, Huhnna, James, Molly and Mitchell and several nieces and nephews. A graveside memorial service will be held at the Patten Cemetery, the time and date to be announced in the spring.
