NEW SALEM, Mass. – Noah I. Edminster, 88, of North Main Street, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Athol Memorial Hospital, Athol, Mass. after an illness. Born in Bangor, in 1918, he was a son of Noah and Anora (Powers) Edminster. He grew up in Bangor, graduating from Bangor High School in 1936 and from Bates College in 1941. After college, he joined the U.S. Marines and proudly served his country in Saipan and Hawaii during World War II, he was honorably discharged Nov. 25, 1945, obtaining the rank of first lieutenant. After the war, Noah earned his master’s degree in history and government from the University of Maine. Mr. Edminster began his career as a teacher in Howland. He was a principal in Woodland, Hudson, Mass. and eventually came to the Ralph C. Mahar Regional School in Orange, Mass. in 1963 and stayed there until his retirement in 1980. After his retirement, he served on the Orange Planning Board and the Orange Airport Commission. He was the editor of the Mass. Principals’ Association Newsletter for several years. He enjoyed sports, especially when children and grandchildren were playing. He also enjoyed dancing with Mildred, traveling, grooming his yard and gardening, and most of all, having his family around him. He had many fond memories of his years at Mahar and was well respected by both the staff and students during his tenure. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Mildred (Page) of New Salem, Mass.; four daughters, Joan Schmickrath of Newburyport, Mass., Jean Mauck of Topsham, Jennifer Edminster of Orange, Mass., and Janine Barrett of Hubbardston, Mass.; his beloved grandchildren, Julie Thompson, Jill King, Jeffrey Eskow, John Aslanian III “Jack,” serving as a U.S. Marine in Iraq, Joyce Aslanian, Justin Eskow, and Amanda Schmickrath. Noah was predeceased by a daughter, Juliet; and a granddaughter, Samantha Eskow. A memorial service will be held 8 p.m. Saturday evening, June 10, at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange, Mass. Calling hours will be held 6-8 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be private in Maine.
