JACKMAN – Norma Katherine Sands, 80, beloved wife of husband, Harry Malcolm Sands, retired schoolteacher, passed away May 17, 2007. Norma was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Montreal, Canada. She was the daughter of Florence Neilson Hamilton and Norman L. Hamilton. Norma graduated from Mooer’s High School, Westbrook Junior College, Barbizon School of Modeling and Fashion and Farmington State Tea-cher’s College. She worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. and Associate’s Discount Corp., Long Island and New York City. In 1950 Norma married Harry Malcolm Sands, recently deceased. Harry and Norma ran Sands Variety Store, Jack-man, for eight years. Norma and Harry had two children, Robert-John H. Sands of Great Falls, Va., and Wendy K. Sands Rosenthal of Fall River, Mass. Norma taught elementary sch-ool in Jackman from 1968 until her retirement in 1986. Norma was a member of the National Education Association, the Maine Association of Retired Teachers and Moose River Con-gregational craft committee. Norma had and enjoyed many interests. She did volunteer work at Jackman Regional Health Center since 1990. Norma was also a member of the Jackman Library and Museum. She was an Episcopalian who attended Moose River Congregational Church. Norma leaves two children, Robert-John H. Sands and Wendy K. Sands Rosenthal; five grandchildren, Gregory, Kathryn, James, Cameron and Stephanie; sister, Marguerite Foster; brother, William Hamilton; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Norma was a loving wife and mother, a dedicated and inspiring teacher, whose wisdom, kindness and compassion inspired hundreds of lives. We miss you so much. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Congregational Church, Moose-River. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Norma K. Sands Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of Border Trust Co., to support the college education of elementary school teachers.
