RAYMOND – Norma Mooers Gray, 75, of Raymond, Maine and Vero Beach, Fla., died July 2, 2004, surrounded by her family at her home on Sebago Lake. Norma’s courage and positive spirit throughout her battle with cancer remains an inspiration to all who knew her. Her final wish was to return to Maine where her life had begun 75 years earlier. Growing up in Bangor and graduating from Bangor High School in 1947, Norma went to the University of Maine in Orono on a scholarship. It was there as a cheerleader that she met the love of her life, George R. Gray, on a blind date. Their journey would lead them to 14 different homes in five states over the next 25 years before settling in Essex Fells, N.J. During that time, Norma raised three children, finished college and taught fifth grade in Chatham, N.J. Although Norma and George retired to Vero Beach, Fla., returning to Maine every summer was always the highlight of each year. Norma leaves behind her husband, George Gray; and three children, Sue Ellen Kelso of Hong Kong, Cynthia Gray Szasz of Upper Arlington, Ohio, and Stephen Gray of Far Hills, N.J. She also leaves four grandchildren, Jamie T. Kelso, Gordon M. Gray, Devon M. Gray and Erin D. Gray; and a sister, Dawn Maher of Bangor. A memorial service will be held at Westbrook Warren Congregational Church in Westbrook, Maine in August. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The George and Norma Gray Fund, care of University of Maine Foundation, 2 Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469.
