CARIBOU – Dr. Ogden E. Small OD, 73, well known area optometrist and ecologist died March 26, 2005, at his Caribou residence following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 10, 1931, in Caribou, the son of William and Hilma (Ullrich) Small. He was a 1949 graduate of Caribou High School, attended Bowdoin College and was a 1955 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. In 1953, he married his wife, Donna (Jacobson) Small. He served as an optometry officer for several years with the U.S. Army at Fort Lee. Following his discharge from the military, he returned to Caribou where he opened his optometry office, a profession Ogden truly loved and remained active in until just several weeks ago. Dr. Small was an active member of many professional organizations, including the American Optometric Assoc., The New England Council of Optometrists, member and past president of both the Maine and Aroostook Optometric Associations and served on the Maine State Board of Optometry. He was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he was on the Vestry for many years and also served as Sr. Warden. He also served on the Aroostook Episcopal Cluster, where he was the co-coordinator, as well as served on the Caribou School Board for a number of years. Ogden truly loved the outdoors and worked tirelessly to protect and preserve the environment of Northern Maine, its woods, waters and wildlife for generations to come. He enjoyed spending many wonderful moments with his family and friends at their camp on Madawaska Lake. He was a member and past president of Sportsmen’s Inc., served on the board of directors of the Natural Resources Council of Maine for many years, was a member and past chairman of the Advisory Council to the Commissioner of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and was a registered Maine Guide for more than 32 years. Surviving in addition to his wife of more than 51 years, Donna of Caribou; are his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Craig and Jane (Mavor) Small of Caribou; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Marion Small of Cape Elizabeth; his two granddaughters whom Ogden adored, Abby Jane Small and Paige Mavor Small both of Caribou; a son-in-law, Capt. Milton Moores of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Wendell and Sheila Jacobson of Raymond and Robert Brown of Washburn; Several nieces and nephews. Dr. Small was predeceased by his daughter, Cheryl Ann Small Moores in 1989; and by two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Edwina and David Anderson and Marietta Brown. Friends may call 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Main Street, Caribou and from 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005, until time of services which will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Susan Murphy and Fr. Robert Smith officiating. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Dr. Small may do so through the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church memorial fund or the Cary Medical Center Oncology Clinic care of The Jefferson Cary Foundation. Interment will be in the Westmanland Cemetery. Arrangements by the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou.
