OTIS – Patricia McElwee (Harris) Grindle, 75, died unexpectedly, March 26, 2005, at her new home near Otis. She was born April 22, 1929, in Ellsworth to William Henry Harris and Mary Ellen “June” (McElwee) Harris of Eastport and was very proud of her Eastport heritage. She attended North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth and graduated from Ellsworth High School. She married Hollis B. Grindle of Northeast Harbor and they raised their family in Brookline, Mass., and later moved to Stamford, Conn. The Grindles retired to Hancock, Maine in 1992, and had recently moved to a new home on the Gary Moore Road in Ellsworth. Pat loved walking at Hancock Point with her dog, Apache, and spending time with many lovely people in town, including Steve and Merna Coffin and the Jones family at Shirley’s Yarns and Crafts. Pat was a devoted wife and wonderful mother and cook, and was famous for consistently brewing the very best coffee. Her get-up-and-go was limitless and even up into her seventies, she worked hard for many years at The Colony in Hulls Cove where she enjoyed the good friends she made and being close to the ocean. She made friends wherever she went and was predeceased by a particularly close and lifelong friend, Teresa (Luchini) Sargent. Pat was an avid reader, loved to knit, and loved feeding and watching her birds. She was kind and caring and always looked on the bright side of things. She was vivacious and full of life and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Pat is survived by her husband, Hollis Grindle; her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Andy Holden of Charlottesville, Va.; her son and his companion, William Grindle and Teresa Davis of Otis; a stepson, Hollis Dow of Otis; her sister, Charlotte Harris of Ellsworth; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is predeceased by two beloved brothers, William “Alec” Harris, and John “Jack” Harris – with whom she was especially close. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with a reception immediately following. Interment will be at a later date in the Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Pat may be made to the Southwest Harbor Animal Shelter, Box 434, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.
