PORTLAND – Olive H. Jackson, 89, passed away Tuesday Feb. 14, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Manor, Portland. She was born Sept. 17, 1916, in Dennysville, a daughter of Earl and Ethel Higgins. She was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Dennysville High School in 1934 and from Maine School of Commerce (Husson College) in 1937. She was named one of the outstanding students by the scholastic societies and awarded honors at commencement exercises. After graduation, she taught commercial subjects at Brownville Junction High School for four years. While there, she also coached girls basketball. She married Clayton D. Jackson of Monson in 1942. She worked in Portland at the office H.J. Heinz Company for a short period, then moved to Bangor and lived there for 40 years, during which time she worked for the Bangor School Department and the Manpower Development Program. When she and her husband retired, they began traveling to Florida to spend their winters. They enjoyed getting together with friends from Maine, spending their winters in Florida and the new friends they met since moving south. Olive moved to Park Danforth in Portland in 1999. She made many new friends there and enjoyed a variety of activities. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her sense of humor and a helping hand to lend when needed. She always had a smile to share. Olive was predeceased by her husband, Clayton D. Jackson; and her son, Dexter Jackson. She is survived by her grandchildren, Tory P. Jackson and wife, Kristen, of Kings Beach, Calif., Jeremy R. Jackson of Falmouth, Thayle J. Heggie and husband, David, of Greensboro, N.C. and Katrina Jackson currently residing in Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen N. Jackson of Falmouth; and many nieces, nephews and their families. Visiting hours will be held 4-6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A committal service will be held noon Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery Chapel, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Ronald McDonald House of Portland, 250 Brackett St., Portland, ME 04102 or the Center for Grieving Children, 49 York St., Portland, ME 04101.
