BELFAST – Vernon L. Hardy, 90, of Belfast died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at home surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was born May 1, 1915, in Carmel, son of Chiropractors Robie and Edna (Lamb) Hardy. He graduated from Crosby High School in 1933. He served in the U.S. Air Force 345th Bomb Group during World War II in the South Pacific. He always had a deep love and appreciation for music. He was noted for his trumpet playing. He performed solos, concerts and played for dances all over the state and also enjoyed playing in the Belfast band. He was a monotype operator for the Kelley Press before going to work for Travelers Insurance in Hartford, Conn. for 21 years. When he retired in 1978, he returned to the peaceful quietness of his family home in Belfast, where he loved and cared for his grandchildren, Michelle and Jason, as they grew up. He was predeceased by one brother, Elwood Hardy. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Eleanor Hardy; one son, Blaine R. Hardy and his wife, Bonnie Hardy; one daughter, Ann (Hardy) Wilkie; grandchildren, Michelle and Jason Wilkie, all of Belfast; one nephew, Edmund Hardy; several dear cousins, Ruth Penney of Brewer, John and Lois Hardy of Portland and Dorothy and Brendan Quirke of Medford, Mass. At Vernon’s request, there will be no services. A private graveside service in Carmel will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a department of one’s choice at Waldo County General Hospital. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
