MACHIAS – Oscar C. Vane, 81, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at a Machias Hospital following a long and courageous battle with cancer. A lifelong resident of Machias, he was born there May 23, 1924, the son of the late William and Blanche (Varney) Vane. He attended the Machias schools. Mr. Vane was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a Private First Class. He worked at the Machias Textile Mill for 30 years until its closure in 1982. He later worked for Dale Whitney & Son working as a foreman for the Blueberry Division. Mr. Vane enjoyed rabbit hunting and fishing the lakes and streams of Washington County. He looked forward to visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He looked forward to weekends with his great-grandson, Bryce Vane. He shared 59 years of marriage with Shirley (Harmon) Vane of Machias. In addition to his wife; family members include his children, Robert Vane and his friend, Sandy, of Machias, Linda Libby and her husband, Wendall, of Whiting; six grandchildren, Steven Libby of Old Orchard Beach, Michael Libby of Whiting, Jason Vane and his wife, Rebecca, of Machiasport, Michael Vane of Saco, Robert Gray and Jessica Gray of Winterport; five great-grandchildren, William, Breann, Joel, Bryce and Eliza; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Vane who died in 1992; a grandson, Joel Vane who died in 2002; and three sisters, Katherine Coles, Elizabeth Tucker and Myrtle Sprague. Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, in Longfellow Cemetery, Machias. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rose M.
