MONSON – Paul B. Allen, 82, died Oct. 16, 2006, at Hibbard Nursing Home, Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Shirley Mills, son of Byron and Georgia (Hanscom) Allen. He attended schools in Shirley Mills and graduated valedictorian from Greenville High School, Class of 1943. During school he participated in sports and school activities, providing his own transportation from Shirley to Greenville. He was proud of the fact that he would walk a telephone pole length and then run a pole length, all the way home. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II and was in Normandy, D-Day plus nine, and in battles in Northern France, Rhineland and in central Europe. He earned several medals, including the Croix de Guerre, awarded by Charles deGaulle. After the war, Paul returned to Shirley and worked for Portland Monson Slate, local sawmills and the B & A Railroad. In 1958, he went to work for Moosehead Manufacturing, retiring in 1989 as plant manager. He served the Town of Monson as selectman and member of the planning board. He was also active in community affairs, including the Monson Academy Board of Trustees, Boy Scout leader, Monson Historical Society, volunteer fire department for 52 years and the Towne Holmbom American Legion Post No. 116 for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Monson United Church of Christ and was instrumental in the building of the new church. Paul’s hobbies included woodworking, gardening, hunting, fishing and he most of all enjoyed shoveling snow. His family includes his wife of 58 years, Joyce (Haggstrom) Allen of Monson; four children and their spouses, Kennard and Gayle of Monson, Dwain and Janet of Dover-Foxcroft, Rodney and Elaine of Rhode Island and Donna and Jonathan Grout of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, Daina, Tom, Kenny, Kirk, Megan, David, Faith and James; a great-granddaughter, Ruby Rose; special niece and nephew, James French and his wife, Sherri, of Guilford and Nancy Taylor of Dover-Foxcroft; a sister-in-law, Althea French of Monson; and two special ladies in his life, Dawn MacPherson-Allen and Lisa Kelley, both of Monson. He was predeceased by a brother, Clarence B. Allen. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Crosby & Neal, 21 Oak St., Guilford. Funeral services will be held 10a.m. Wednesday at the Monson UCC Church with Pastor Marilyn Sargent officiating. Burial will be at Lakeroad Cemetery, Monson.
