ST. ALBANS and MILTON – Paul G. Ford, 83, passed away early Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, in the Fletcher Allen healthcare facility in Burlington. He was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Bangor, the son of Leonard H. Ford, Md., and Cora (Phillips) Ford. He was a resident of St. Albans for 38 years, but moved to Milton in 1997 where he has made his home with his daughter, Nancy-Jo and her husband, Leland Morgan. Paul graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1940, and Fryeburg Academy in Maine in 1941. An Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1941-1945 with the 152nd Field Artillery Band and in Europe with the medical detachment of the 114th Medics, 26th Yankee Division. Following his Army service, he resumed his studies and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in 1949, where he was a president of the deutscher verein, the honorary German society at the University. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Maine in 1952. Over a period of 39 years, Paul was an instructor in French, Latin and German at Bucksport High School in Maine, the Kents Hill School in Maine and Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, Vt., where he taught for over 30 years. For some 28 years, he was a part-time radio announcer in Maine for WLBZ in Bangor, WFAU in Augusta and WWSR in St. Albans, Vt. He will be remembered in the St. Albans area by former students, friends and his radio audience for his dry wit and precise command of the English language. A favorite was his morning show on WWSR radio called “Greenwood’s Grill” in which he portrayed various local characters dropping in for a chat. He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in St. Albans. He also belonged to Green Mountain Post No. 1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Paul married Joanne S. Smith, Aug. 11, 1951, in Bangor, she died Feb. 19, 1998, in Milton. He is survived by three daughters, Nancy-Jo and her husband, Leland Morgan, of Milton; Sally and her husband, Joshua Kaufmann, of St. Albans, and Kathy Ford of Burlington. He also leaves five grandchildren, Christopher Morgan and his wife, Marcela, and their daughter, Maria, of Burlington, Timothy Morgan and his partner, Rhonda Fujan, of Dover, Del. and Heidi, Benjamin Paul and Andrea Kaufmann of St. Albans, Paul’s close friend, Katheryn Killoran, of Pittsford, Vt. and several family members in the Bangor area. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Church Street, St. Albans. Interment will be in the Ford family lot in Greenwood Cemetery.
