PORTLAND and HAMLIN – Pauline C. Belanger, 69, died Jan. 11, 2004, at a Portland healthcare facility. She was born June 11, 1934, in Hamlin, the daughter of Walter G. and Mary Ann (Cyr) Cyr. From 1953 to 1964, she worked as a rectory cook for the Marist Fathers in Van Buren and Rhode Island. Along with her husband and family, she owned and operated a Belanger’s Grocery Store in Hamlin for several years. She was a former member of the Evangeline Circle, Daughters of Isabella of Van Buren. After moving to Portland several years ago, Pauline resided at Longfellow Commons from 1990 to 2002, where she was very active with the Residence Council, coordinating a variety of social activities. She was also involved in various political campaign activities in the Portland area. Pauline is survived by two daughters, C. Joyce Varns and her husband, Art, of Jacksonville, Fla., and M. Jane Gottschlagg and her husband, Jurgen, of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada; one sister, Emelda Cyr of Saco; three brothers, Cleophas Cyr of Clearwater, Fla., Elie Cyr of Bowmansville, Pa., and Cyprian Cyr of Connecticut. She was predeceased by her husband, Adrien “Tatoon” Belanger in 1988. Relatives and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, and 9 a.m. until time of service on Monday, Jan. 19, at the Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 12 High St., Van Buren. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hamlin. Spring interment will be in the parish cemetery.
