ROQUE BLUFFS – Philip F. Day, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at a Machias health care facility after a sudden illness. He was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Augusta, the son of the late Clarence and Susan (Floyd) Day. Mr. Day was educated in Augusta and furthered his education at the University of Maine – Orono. He graduated from the Chicago Divinity School receiving a bachelor’s of divinity. Philip met his wife, Beth (Carlander) at the school where she was studying to become a director of Christian education. He was ordained into the United Church of Christ in 1946. He served churches in Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois. In his later years, he received a doctorate in sociology from the University of Iowa in 1971. He taught sociology at Washburn University, Topeka, Kan., for many years, retiring in 1984. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Beth, moved to Roque Bluffs, where they resided next to his sister, Dorothy Day. He was a member of the Centre Street Congregational Church, Machias where he provided faithful leadership. He also was a member of the Roque Bluffs planning board and a board member of the Sunrise Opportunities. Mr. Day was a flower gardener, especially begonias and enjoyed reading. He shared 60 years of marriage with Beth (Carlander) of Roque Bluffs. In addition to his wife, family members include his children, Ellen Louise Tripp and her husband, Kenneth, of Donahue, Iowa, Steven Day and his wife, Teresa, of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Derrick Tripp, Grant and Logan Day; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Day in 2002. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Centre Street Congregational Church, Centre Street, Machias, with pastors Gini King and Betty Duzen officiating.
