BANGOR – Philip John Hannan Jr., 74, of Bangor, died Sept. 10, 2005, after a six-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He fought with courage and dignity to the end and died with his loving family by his side. It was the love and support of his wife, Jeanne and family, along with his deep faith that sustained him throughout his life. Philip was born Sept. 7, 1931, in Hodge, La. the son of the late Philip J. Hannan Sr., and Kathleen Griffith Hannan. He attended Holy Cross University and graduated with a degree in business administration from Louisiana Tech University where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army in the finance department during the Korean War. He moved to Bangor in 1955 to work in a family business, Maine Freightways, as a terminal manager. After marrying Jeanne in 1957, Phil was employed as an insurance agent for Boston Mutual for several years and then went to be a general agent, retiring after 31 years with Allstate Insurance Company. He was a member of the Bangor Jaycees, the Lions Club, the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis Club, the Eastern Maine Seniors Golf Association, and the American Legion Post No. 0012. Philip was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Pine Cone Council Knights of Columbus. He was a loyal communicant of St. John’s Catholic Church for 50 years serving on the parish council, finance committee and also as a lector and greetor. Phil was a devoted husband, father and grandfather whose personality and dry wit delighted all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, D. Jeanne (Leveille) Hannan; and four children, Katherine Merkel and her husband, James, of South Portland, Philip J. Hannan III and his wife, Laurel Aubrey, of Cape Elizabeth, Clare Hannan and her husband, Stephen Von Vogt, of Portland, and Matthew Hannan of Napa, Calif.; He will be sadly missed by his beloved grandchildren, James Merkel III; Augustus Von Vogt, and Aubrey Hannan. The family wishes to thank the caring staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital on the 5th floor, Dr. Andrew Dixon and especially Dr. Frederick Heineman for his professional and compassionate care of many years. Relatives and friends are invited to call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at St. John’s Catholic Church, with the Very Rev. Richard McLaughlin, pastor and the Rev. Rudolph Leveille, concelebrants. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family invites relative and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith, Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the burial.
