HANCOCK – Phillip “Wolfman” Harry Bowden of Hancock, loved more than words can express, died on Sept. 21, 2004, after a long period of debilitating medical conditions. He was born May 2, 1953, the youngest child of Hazelton E. and Alice (Hayes) Bowden in Portland because his father, Rusty, was attending Gorham State Teachers College. However, Phil always claimed his roots were in Castine and Orland. Marlene A. Lloyd has been his companion and life partner since October, 1984. She also became his caregiver in 1991. Their commitment was symbolized by the Irish claddagh: Friendship, Love, Loyalty. Phil was proud of his service in the U.S. Marine Corps, 1971-1979. Once a Marine, always a Marine. One of his favorite sayings, which was posted at his “Whatcha Want Wood Shop” was “Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it.” He loved to tell jokes and stories, whether to a stranger or his doctor. All his life he was known for wearing a red hat. Phil often said, “I gots ta be me”, and so he was. He had his own song to sing. His surviving family includes, two daughters and five granddaughters, all of Phoenix, Ariz., Melissa Marie and her children, Mariah and Kevonna; Lynda Kay and her children, Torian, Regenea and Audrey, born July 14, 2004; his siblings, Dennis R. Bowden of Stockton Springs, Lorelei H. Lowell of Pownal, Darlene J. Thomas of Hancock, Paula D. Bowden of Penobscot; two aunts, Dorothea Hamlin of Dresden and Corrus Paradis of West Peru; an uncle, Theodore Hayes of Phoenix, Ariz.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, David Darling; and a very special nephew, DeFaurice “Shaney” Bowden. Phil loved children and was wonderful with them. In recent years he has greatly enjoyed sharing time with Sarah, the daughter of his good and steadfast friend, Loren Spurling. He had a special bond for years with Amanda Cone, Marlene’s niece. Phil became fascinated by wolf-hybrids in 1986 and traveled all the way to Virginia to fetch that first wolf pup. He named her “Wonder” and she lived up to her name. She was followed by seven wolf-hybrids over the years, each of them a unique animal. A time of visitation and sharing, a celebration of Phil’s life, will be held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at the American Legion Post 207, 163 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Phil’s name to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, Inc. 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688 in tribute to his dearly loved nephew, Shaney Bowden. Phil will be returning to his beloved swamp where he built his post and beam home beside Kilkenny Stream, his boyhood haunt. Semper Fi, Marine. Safe journey. Arrange-ments by Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth.
