ELLSWORTH – Robert Stevens Kleinschmidt, 79, died Nov. 7, 2004, at Lakewood AFCH in Ellsworth. He was born Oct. 8, 1925, in Boston, Mass., the son of Robert V. and Eleanor M. (Stevens) Kleinschmidt. Steve attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in Hawaii training radar technicians. He taught briefly at Northeastern and Tufts Universities. Steve worked for Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket before starting his engineering practice in Pittsfield in 1966. That practice grew to be the firm of Kleinschmidt Associates. He retired from the firm in 1990. In the early 1980’s he moved to Ellsworth and developed the hydroelectric generation plant at Green Lake, and resided in Ellsworth since then. Steve is survived by three sons; David of Orono, Robert, Jr. of Sunland, Calif., and Mark Kleinschmidt, of Oakland; a daughter, Martha Reifschneider, of Silver Spring, Md.; two sisters, Ellen Strength of Alabama and Louise Tintle of Vermont; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth (Zacharchuk) who died in 1980, and his second wife, Kathleen (Blackman) Wood who died in 2002. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the Village Cemetery, Pittsfield. Those who desire may make contributions in Steve’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
