BAILEYVILLE and BANGOR Ralph John Ryan Sr., 78, died June 9, 2007, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Jan. 29, 1929, in Calais, the son of Charles and Lulie (Hall) Ryan. Ralph graduated from high school in Media, Penn., and earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical technology from the University of Southern Maine. He was a very dedicated worker for Georgia Pacific and its predecessor, the St. Croix Paper Co., for 45 years, until he became injured on the job. Ralph was a member of the union for 20 years, and served as president and financial secretary. He was a lifetime member of the Calais Knights of Columbus. In addition to his many accomplishments, he greatly enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cribbage, and collecting stamps and baseball cards. He was a loyal Red Sox fan. One of Ralph’s greatest joys was Boy Scouts of America. He started as a Cub Scout and was awarded the Silver Beaver in recognition of his service to the Scouts. His three sons also became involved in the Boy Scouts. He will be remembered for his enthusiasm, dedication and significant contributions to the community and to the youth of two countries. He was a charter member of the Spednic Club and served on the executive board of the Boy Scouts Katahdin Area Council for several years. He received the prestigious IBEW George Meany National Scouting Award and the Wood Badge. Ralph also received the 1990 International Festival Amity Award. He also served on his town’s recreation committee, in addition to being a Little League coach. He had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by all whose life he touched. Ralph is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie (McCurdy) Ryan. He has seven children, 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Charles Ryan. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, at St. John’s Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor, with the Very Rev. Richard McLaughlin, pastor, celebrant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at 21 Boyd Place, Bangor, immediately after the service.
