PRESQUE ISLE – Ralph T. Sweetser, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at a Presque Isle healthcare facility. He was born Dec. 6, 1912 in Presque Isle, the son of Elvin and Amy (Richardson) Sweetser. Ralph graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1932. Ralph and his brothers, Lawrence and Richard, were very active in athletics. He played basketball for four years at P.I.H.S., was the leading scorer in 1929-31 and was the captain of the varsity basketball team in his senior year. His team won the state championship in 1932. Captain Sweetser held a new Maine schoolboy shot-put record. He hurled the iron ball 48 feet 7 inches in the spring of 1931, at the Maine Interscholastics. He was an avid sportsman, loved to fish and hunt, was an outstanding golfer and was a past member of the Presque Isle Country Club. Ralph farmed for 45 years on the family farm. He is survived by two sons and their wives, Stephen and Pauline of Presque Isle, Ralph Jr. and Rita of Monmouth; four grandchildren, Donna Gardner of Lewiston, Charles Sweetser of Reading, Mass., Amy Sweetser Goulet of Presque Isle and Aaron Sweetser of Presque Isle; eight great- grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Juanita (Blinn) Sweetser; two brothers, his twin, Richard and Lawrence; two sisters, Blanche Haynes and Addie Smart. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, with the Rev. Larry Palmer officiating. Relatives and friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service, at the funeral home. Spring interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery.
