ORONO and BANGOR – Raymond F. “Franny” McCluskey, 76, died Oct. 16, 2006, at a Bangor health care center. Franny was born Feb. 28, 1930, in Bangor, the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Dunn) McCluskey. He served in the U.S. Navy as a boiler tender second class and is a lifetime member of the Hampden VFW Whitcomb Baker, Post No. 4633 and the American Legion Post of Orono. He was a member of the Bangor Fire Department. “Mackie,” as he was known to his fellow firefighters, retired in 1980 with 20 years of service. He later worked at Sawyer Environmental in the scalehouse until full retirement. One of Raymond’s proudest and most humble accomplishments in his life was his 43-year friendship with Bill W. – reaching out to help his peers, with the same disease, throughout the years. The second was being a square dance caller. He and his wife organized the Vagabond Squares Club. Surviving, in addition to his wife of 43 years, Myrtle “Bunny” McCluskey of Orono are two daughters, Debra and husband, Mike Wedge, of Hampden and Cynthia and husband, Richard Swift, of Windham; two stepsons, Floyd “Sandy” Sanborn and partner, Wanda Smith, of Carmel and Stephen and wife, Terry Sanborn, of Bangor; grandchildren, Dean and Keith Romprey, Jodi Sanborn, Hillary, Amy and Stephen Sanborn, Wesley, Dale and Jerry Sibley; one brother, Lawrence McCluskey; and three sisters, Mary Hyranscka, Madelyn “Jeannette” Leavitt, Patricia Turner; several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by Nance Byard, Gail and Mike and the many other friends from his camp on Boyd Lake. He was predeceased by one sister, Katherine “Kate” Nolan; and three brothers, John, Robert and Louis “Dugan” McCluskey. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a prayer service will be held 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Carl Schreiber, interim pastor of the East Orrington Congregational Church, officiating.
