SKOWHEGAN – Raymond P. Ames, 77, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at Maine General Medical Center, Thayer Unit, in Waterville. He was born June 8, 1927, Pittsfield, the son of Raymond M. and Tillie (Cameron) Ames. He graduated from Hartland Academy, Class of 1945. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and while in the Navy he received the American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He married the former Bernice “Bunny” Wright, on June 16, 1950 in Pittsfield. Raymond was employed by Central Maine Power Co. starting out in Pittsfield then in Skowhegan. He then became District Line Supervisor in Rumford, then District Line Supervisor in Waterville, then the Northern Division Line Superintendent for a total of 44 years retiring in 1992. He was a Master Mason, raised at the Corinthian Lodge in Hartland where he has been an active member for more than 50 years. He was also an active member of the Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston for over 30 years. Raymond and his wife, Bernice, also served Bethlehem Chapter 36 Order of the Eastern Star in Pittsfield since 1953. He was a member of the Skowhegan Federated Church. Ray loved spending time with his family and most especially his grandchildren. He was a big sports fan especially for the Red Sox. He played baseball for the Navy team during his tour of duty. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and gardening. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Bernice, of Skowhegan; three children, Calvin Ames and wife, Cathy, of East Madison, Ginger Madore and husband, Ronald, of Lamoine, Bradley Ames and wife, Lori, of Skowhegan; one sister, Doris Lary of Hartland; six grandchildren, Laura and Cindy Madore, Regan Ames, Breanna, Alexis, and Sydney Ames; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Phillip Russell Ames in 1972. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at the Skowhegan Federated Church on Island Avenue, with the Rev. Mark Tanner, officiating. Burial will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Hartland. Donations may be made in Raymond’s memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114-2699.
