CARIBOU – The Rev. Gordon Glenn Newell, 89, died March 14, 2007, in Caribou. He was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Northfield, Vt., the son of Guy and Marian (Sprague) Newell. He was a graduate of the Montpelier Seminary; The Irving School of Drama, New York; Bangor Theological Seminary; as well as Tuffs University. For more than 65 years, the Rev. Newell served congregations as a First Congregational minister, as well as a Unitarian Universalist minister at numerous churches throughout New England, was Pastor Emeritus of the First Congregational Church of Shelburne, and was a longtime member of the Caribou Unitarian Universalist Church. He will be remembered by many as the “pie parson” for his famous apple pies. The Rev. Newell had a true passion for life and enjoyed it to its fullest. He loved nature and all of its beauty and also enjoyed good poetry. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Judith and Robert Solman, and Elizabeth Maifeld; and a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lena Newell, all of Caribou; six grandchildren, Scott, Jeff and Douglas Solman, Christopher and Jason Maifeld, and Brian Newell; five great-grand-children; and his first wife, Anne Newell of Caribou. Gordon was predeceased by his second wife, Gladys Newell. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the First Congregational Church, Shelburne, Mass. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of the Rev. Newell may do so through First Congregational Church of Shelburne or Caribou Unitarian Universalist Church.
