BRADFORD – The Rev. Lewis M. Mowdy, 94, went home to be with his Lord Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004. A retired Episcopal Priest, Fr. Mowdy was born in California and spent a large portion of his life in Pennsylvania before moving to Bradford to be near his family. In the 1930’s, he spent two years in Japan as a teaching missionary. He served in Army Intelligence during World War II in North Africa and Italy. He came home and married Hazel Kafka in 1945, and worked for the American Car and Foundry Company in Berwick, Pennsylvania as an accountant. He was also the General Secretary of the Berwick YMCA, and was active in the Boy Scouts, the Masonic Lodge, and civic work. In the 1960’s, he completed studies for the ministry, and was ordained in the Episcopal Church. He was pastor of churches in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, and Williamsport, Pa., and retired to Milford, Pa. In January of 2002, he and his wife moved to Bradford, Maine. He is survived by Hazel Mowdy, his wife of nearly 60 years; his son, Robert and his wife, Brenda; granddaughter, Jenny Mowdy Worster and her husband, Kenneth, all of Bradford. A memorial service in celebration of his life and ministry is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, French Street, Bangor.
