MAPLETON – Richard A. Gardiner, 81, died Nov. 16, 2003, at his residence. He was born May 15, 1922, in Presque Isle, the son of William and Damey (Cook) Gardiner. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been employed by local construction companies working as a mason and was known to be a hard worker. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen (Bates) Gardiner of Mapleton; a daughter, Robin Gaites and her husband, Philip, of Presque Isle; two grandchildren, Kelley Gaites of Lakewood, Colo., and R.J. Gaites of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a brother, John Gardiner of Sabattus; a sister, Helen “Peggy” Bergman of Guilford, Conn.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Emily Gaites; a brother, Hartley Gardiner; a sister, Laura Rolan; and a good friend, Lloyd Parker. At his request there will be no calling hours or service. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements in the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle.
