SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. – Richard A. Maddan, 63, passed away Nov. 26, 2004, at home in the company of his loving family. Born in Milford, he was the son of the late Rodney C. and Ellen (Chase) Maddan. Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. In 1966, he and his father completely rebuilt a 1942 Taylorcraft single engine airplane which he enjoyed for personal use. He pursued his interest in aviation at Central Maine Flying Service in Old Town, where he became a flight instructor, acquiring his commercial instructor, instrument instructor, and Airline Transport Pilot ratings in single and multi-engine airplanes, and later, in helicopters and jets. In 1980, he accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Administration in Charleston, W.Va. as a flight safety inspector. He became manager of the Charleston office in 1987. In 1989, he accepted the position of manager of FAA Flight Standards District Office-5 in Allentown, Pa. Throughout his 13 years of dedicated service in this position, he received numerous awards including manager of the year and FSDO of the year. He retired in 2002. Richard was an avid NASCAR fan and outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and RV travel, and was an excellent cook who loved to try new recipes. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield and eagerly contributed his time and service to the Ecumenical Soup Kitchen in Allentown. Richard will be remembered by his family, friends and associates for his unwavering sense of integrity and for establishing environments based on honor and principle. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Sharon; son, John Maddan and wife, Tara, Crescent Springs, Ky.; daughters, Maureen Jarrell and husband, Terry, of Port Orange, Fla., Jill Conway and husband, Len, of Midlothian, Va., and Debra Maddan, of Schnecksville, Pa.; grandchildren, Nicholas Maddan, Alexander, Adrianna and Emily Weaver, and Lauren Maddan; sister, Carol Stanley, Old Town; brothers, Kurt Maddan, Frankfort and Eric Maddan, Lewiston. He was predeceased by his daughter, Christine Maddan in 1997. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 1879 Applewood Dr., Orefield, Pa. Call 2-4 an 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 17th and Hamilton Streets, Allentown. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
