WASHBURN – Richard A. Sperry, 71, husband of Shirley (St. Germaine) Sperry, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Maine Veterans Home in Caribou. He was born May 20, 1933, at Presque Isle, the son of Robert and Joyce (Bennett) Sperry of Washburn. Richard was a graduate of Washburn High School, the salutatorian of his class, graduate of Husson College and he received a honorary degree from Husson College in 1995, a degree to celebrate his work and contributions to the community. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army 103rd Airborne Div. out of Fort Campbell, Ky., during the Korean War. Richard was part owner of A.E. Flewelling Construction Co. in Crouseville. He served 22 years on the Washburn Town Council, many years as secretary, served on the Revolving Loan Committee, lifelong member of the Washburn Rotary Club, was President during the 50th Anniversary, and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, the highest award given by the Washburn Rotary. He was past president of the Washburn Jaycees, member of the parish council of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and served on the building committee. A 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus John Harris 2524 Council Presque Isle. He was a member of the Association of General Contractors of Maine, National and Aroostook County Accounting Society. Richard enjoyed fishing and traveling. He and Shirley traveled to 46 of the 50 states after his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley (St. Germaine) Sperry of Washburn; two sons, Michael Sperry and his wife, Nancy, of Stratton, Patrick Sperry and his partner, Michael Parker, of Peabody, Mass.; four grandchildren, Megan and Andrew Sperry of Stratton, Nichole Parker of Valdosta, Ga., Amanda Parker of Peabody, Mass.; two brothers, Robert Carroll Sperry and his wife, Mary Jane, and Howard Sperry and his wife, Margaret “Peggy”, all of Washburn; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Janet Bondeson; and his niece, Kari Jo Bouchard. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at Crouseville Cemetery, Crouseville, with the Rev. Scott Mower officiating. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Richard A.
