HANCOCK – Richard “Dick” Leon Malaby passed away April 22, 2007. He was born May 3, 1924, in Philadelphia, the son of Guy and Rose Malaby. Dick retired from Sperry Univac after 35 years of service as a mainframe operator. He was a graduate of the first class of operators back in the early 50s and was widely recognized as one of the best in his field. On election night in November of 1956, he appeared on television as the person operating the computer when the votes were tallied for the first time by a mainframe computer. Dick was a veteran who enlisted in the Navy and saw action in the South Pacific, his ship, U.S.S. Quincy, was sunk at the Battle of Savo Island when it was struck by multiple torpedoes. Dick was one of only a handful of survivors, as it was early in the morning and most of the crew was still asleep when the first torpedoes tore through the hull of the ship. Dick was predeceased by his first wife, Sadie; and his second wife, Jidd. He is survived by four sons and two daughters, John J. of Hancock, Richard Steven and his wife, Elizabeth, of Hancock, Robert Charles, and his wife, Cori, of Huntington, N.Y., Guy Edward and his wife, Mary Lynn, of Mendham, N.J., Brenda Lawn and her husband, Scott, of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., Linda Baird and her husband, Truman, of Eugene, Ore. There are 11 grandchildren, Richard, William and Megan, Jordan and Madison, Sadie, Molly Rose, Robert and Kent, Robin and Ryan, all of whom will miss their grandfather. A small family service will be held in New Jersey during the summer.
