NIANTIC, Conn. – Richard F. Downing, 80, formerly of Bangor and Hampden, passed away Aug. 26, 2006, in Storrs, Conn. Born March 8, 1926, in Bangor, he was the son of Charles B. and Alice Flanders Downing. A graduate of Wassukeag High School, he also attended Bangor schools and the University of Maine for two years. Mr. Downing was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp in Europe. Mr. Downing was an estimator for the family owned business, C.H. Babb & Co., Bangor. After moving to Niantic, Conn., he was employed by several plumbing and heating companies as a mechanical estimator. He retired in 1991. He enjoyed yard work, gardening, golf, building and ski vacations at his vacation home in Vermont. He was a former member of the Penobscot Valley Country Club, Orono; the New London Country Club, Waterford, Conn.; and The Norwich Golf Course, Norwich, Conn. He was the husband of the late Joan Hanna Downing. Survivors include three daughters, Susan D. Hall and her husband, Kelly Hall, of Mystic, Conn., Sally Clark of Storrs, Conn., and Sharon Staub and her husband, Dusty, of Niantic, Conn.; seven grandchildren, Michael Hall, Ashley Hall, Kelly Clark, Tim Clark, Nick Staub, Kaitlyn Devlin-Perry and Matt Staub; and a great-grand-daughter, Lila Devlin-Perry. A burial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor, with the Venerable Tom Benson, Archdeacon of St. John’s Episcopal Church, officiating. Please meet 11:15 a.m. at the Superintendent’s Lodge, State Street entrance prior to the service.
