BELFAST – Richard F. White, 63, died Jan. 6, 2004, at the Hospice Unit of Waldo County General Hos-pital. He was born Sept. 21, 1940, in Boston, the son of Richard and Mary White. He spent his early years in Massachusetts and Ohio. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served for three years. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and subsequently earned his graduate degree from Boston University. During his years living in the Boston area, he had a great interest in healthcare, leading to employment at the Massachusetts General Hospital, a subsequent administrative position at the Lahey Clinic, as well as for a number of years, organizing and managing meetings of medical societies, both regional and national. Among his friends were a number of prominent leaders in American medicine practicing in the greater New England area. As a long standing member of the Union Boat Club, he was a more than formidable squash opponent. In 1995, he and his companion, Tike Voet, moved to Belfast. His expertise in horticulture allowed him to utilize his talents in the nurseries of Agway and Wallace Landscaping. The flower and vegetable gardens surrounding his home in Belfast, cared for by the two of them, were well known and admired. He loved history both American and Irish, non-fiction books, photography, camping, plants of all kinds, especially Bonsai and all things Irish, particularly music. He was fiercely proud of his Boston roots, his Irish heritage and his service in the Marine Corps. He leaves behind his beloved companion, Tike Voet; a daughter, Sara Jane Potter and his sister, Suzanne Martin, both of Massachusetts, The Wise Old Men of the Tribe, and many friends and neighbors whose kindness and caring made his last days so much easier. At his request there will be no funeral. Interment of his remains will be at sea in the spring. Arrangements were made by Rackliffe Funeral Home. Friends may make memorial donations in his name to Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, 119 Northport Ave., Belfast, ME 04915.
