BANGOR and BREWER Richard J. Newbury II, 39, peacefully passed away July 20, 2006, at a family member’s home in Sedgwick. He was born Aug. 24, 1966, in Bangor, the son of Richard and Catherine (Robertson) Newbury. Although he is finally at peace with himself and the world, he found some of this peace during his lifetime spending time hunting in Maine’s woods and fishing in its lakes and ponds with his brother and cousins. He was a devoted father and husband who cherished family times, holidays and tradition. Routinely holding summer BBQ’s and large Thanksgivings were some of the many ways he tried to teach his children the importance of family bonding and maintaining family ties and connections. Family times were of such importance to him that he gave up his life, personal and professional, so that his children would have one parent at home at all times when they were young. He continued to embrace this traditional idea right through the time that he passed. His children and grandchildren could often be found, cuddled up in the crook of his right arm, watching television together, battling for control of the remote. A battle he would temporarily lose when “slimed” by “The Blue Meanie” and in more recent years “Papa’s Little Girl.” A basket of laundry in his hands was a sight both dreaded and looked forward to by “Snuggle.” Folding the laundry provided lots of laughs as they watched favorite TV Land shows, The Monsters and Three Stooges. “Fred” learned quickly that the secret to maintaining long hair was to have her Daddy brush it as opposed to her cutting it. And finally, the “Brat-Kid” with her incessant questioning, “Why Daddy? Why can’t I?” yet total obedience and adherence in her quest to be “the perfect child.” These are some of the memories that Richard left behind. He is survived by his wife, Melissa (Bailey) Newbury of Old Town; two sons, Richard Newbury II and his wife, Teresa, of Sangerville, Nicholas Bailey of Old Town; three daughters, Lela-Michelle Newbury, Samantha Newbury and Katie Newbury, all of Old Town; his mother, Catherine (Robertson) Gilman of Bangor; his brother, Craig Newbury of Hermon; his sister, Kelly Howe of Old Town; two grandchildren, Makenzie and Makayla Newbury, both of Sangerville; a special niece, CJ Newbury-King of Enfield, Conn.; a best friend, hunting/fishing buddy and cousin, Richard Reynolds of Brewer; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, grandparents; and Uncle Ronald Robertson. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer where a service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson, Chaplain of Husson College, officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.Brookings-Smith.com
