LOWELL – Richard L. Fox, 89, husband of the late Anita (Michaud) Fox, died Aug. 19, 2004, at a Howland healthcare facility. He was born, May 18, 1915, in Lowell, the son of Lloyd L. and Angie M. (Goodwin) Fox. Dick owned and operated Fox’s Garage in Lowell. He worked from the time he was able to squeeze the bellows at his grandfather’s forge. His work began as fixing wagons and shoeing horses, and he repaired most children’s bicycles at least once. His business evolved into repairing automobiles and selling gas and oil and he had a small store at the garage. The garage was the town gathering place for the men of the area, who all made at least one visit a day. On the few occasions that Dick wasn’t busy, he could be found playing solitaire in the window of the garage, or sitting in a chair in the open garage doors enjoying the fresh air. Dick really enjoyed watching his grandsons grow up around the garage and at Escutarsis Lake. He was a life member of Horeb Lodge No. 93, A.F. & A.M. He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Bette and Harold Whitten, of Lowell; two grandsons and their wives, Hal and Kim Whitten, of Howland, and Jeff and Cheryl Whitten, of Enfield; four great-grandchildren, Katie, Alissa, Jacob and Hannah; a sister, Laura Rolfe, of Lowell; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Anita, he was predeceased by two brothers, Orman and George; and two sisters, Margaret Higgins and Anne Bland. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. A Masonic memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Sunday. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at the West Enfield Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Perry officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Escutarsis Grange Building Improvement Fund. For an online register book, please visit www.clayfuneralhome.com.
