STOCKTON SPRINGS Robert F. Ludwig, 85, died June 12, 2004, at his home. He was born Dec. 4, 1918, in New York, N.Y., the son of Carl H. and Marie (Forcier`) Ludwig. As a young man, he was an extensive world traveler, visiting such places as St. Petersburg, Russia, The Artic Circle, and riding horseback through Yellowstone National Park. He met his future wife, Beatrice McClellan, while attending Packard Business School and they married in Biloxi, Miss. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and was stationed at Hunter Air Force Base, Savannah, Ga. He and “Betty” moved to Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and he began working with his father, Carl Henry, and became Vice President of A. Ludwig and Co. Inc, a brass hardware-manufacturing corporation, based in lower Manhattan that was started by his grandfather Adolph Ludwig. In 1953, he moved to South Salem, N.Y., and began commuting the long distance into the city. His father eventually sold the family business, but he remained as a consultant to the firm for an additional five years. He and Betty moved to Stockton Springs in the early 1970s, and became members of the Stockton Springs Community Church. He was a longtime member of the New York Athletic Club, and a member of the South Salem Presbyterian Church. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed the outdoors, boating, bowling and golfing. Robert was also a generous philanthropist, donating much of his monies to Waldo County charities and the Stockton Springs Community, including a wing at the Waldo County General Hospital, Belfast, named in Betty’s honor. Robert is survived by his wife, Marjorie Ludwig of Stockton Springs; son, Robert C. Ludwig and wife, Gail, of Scarborough; daughter, Joan Larrabee and husband, Curt, of Searsport; grandchildren, Erika Jensen and husband, Neil, of Canaan, N.H., Brad Hudson and wife, Jenny, of Atlanta, Ga., Alexandra Ludwig and husband, Joydeep Bhattacharya of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Deana Misner and husband, Chris, of Erie, Colo., Rob Hudson and wife, Liz, of Ellsworth; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Grant Hudson of Atlanta, Ga.; three stepsons; one step-daughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Robert was predeceased by his first wife of 56 years, Beatrice “Betty” Ludwig. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Stockton Springs Community Church, with Pastor Wilton Rose officiating. Interment will be in Mount Recluse Cemetery, Stockton Springs.
