UNION – Robert “Bob” Whittier, 62, a resident and longtime dairy farmer on Winterwind Farm, Union, collapsed at his home and died at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport, Thursday morning, July 5, 2007. Bob was born Aug. 20, 1944, in Camden, the son of Cleveland Arthur and Lucy Johnson Whittier. He was a graduate of Rockport High School, Class of 1962. He married Gail Kirkpatrick in 1963. Bob began his farming with Aldermere Farms during high school working as a herdsman. After his marriage, he worked for the Knox Mining Co., surveying potential mining sights. In 1969, he moved to the Overlock Hill Road and began Winterwind Farm there in 1972, together with his family’s hard work, growing the dairy herd to what it is today. An active community leader, Bob served on the Town of Union Budget Committee, recreation committee, and a term as town selectman. He was the founding member of the Clary Hill Band and played with the group for more than 20 years as guitarist and vocalist. He was a 30-year member of the Union Lodge No. 31 AF & AM, enjoyed visiting with friends at various coffee shops in town, and collecting antique cars. Survivors include his wife, Gail Whittier of Union; a daughter, Cheryl Dawson and her husband, Bruce, of Jefferson; a grandson, Derek Dawson of Jefferson; two sisters, Kay Cochran of Warren and Shirley Main of Camden; many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at Lakeview Cemetery, Union, behind Winterwind Farm.
