SMITHFIELD – Robert J. Langan Jr., 80, died Sunday Aug. 21, 2004, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Robert was born in Charleston, S.C., May 15, 1924, the son of Robert and Mary (Hanley) Langan. Robert moved to Flora Park, N.Y. as a young child. Following High School, he served in the American, European-African, Asiatic and Pacific Theaters with U.S. Navy during World War II where he earned the Bronze Star for Valor. Following his service he worked briefly for the Long Island Rail Road in Hunters Point, N.Y. He was employed for 38 years by Consolidated Edison as a gas dispatcher at the Energy Control Center, retiring to Smithfield, in 1985. During his retirement, Robert enjoyed traveling, working around his camp and home, and spending time with his family and beloved dog Casey. He was predeceased by two sisters, Marcella Hessel, and Elizabeth Cuccia; a brother, Joseph Patrick Langan; and a nephew, Carl Cuccia. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ethel (King ) Langan, of Smithfield; Children, Patrick Langan, and wife, Lorie, Corinne Hillert, and husband, Edward, Robert Langan III, Timothy Langan, and wife, Colleen, Stephen Langan and wife, Rosa, Mary Langan-Gagne, and husband, Marc, and Helen Sandstrom, and husband, Arthur; grandchildren, Deborah Gould, and husband, Jim, John Hillert, Stephanie and Michelle Langan, Joseph and Ryan Gagne, Arthur and Christina Sandstrom, Timothy and Caitlin Langan; great- grandchildren, Helen and Samantha Gould; sisters-in- Law, Charlotte Rothrock and Lina King; numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center and the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor for the excellent care Robert received and the emotional support given to them during his illness. Friends are invited to visit 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Wheeler Funeral Home, Church Street, Oakland. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Oakland. Burial will be on Long Island, N.Y. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330.
