ACTON – Roland J. “Papa” Legere, 76, a professional photographer for more than 44 years died Sunday evening peacefully at his home on Wilson Lake. He was born May 10, 1928, in Sanford, a son of Amedee J. and Cordelia (Royer) Legere. He attended the former St. Ignatius School, and was a graduate of the former St. Ignatius High School in 1947. He also was a graduate of the Franklin Institute of Photography in Boston, Mass. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan as a medical technician at what later became Tokyo General Hospital. Following his discharge in 1951, he opened Legere’s Studio, which he operated until his retirement in 1996. In 1980, he added Formal Wear and Limo Service to his photo company. A 75-year resident of Sanford, and a summer resident of Wilson Lake in Acton for 40 years, he has been a winter resident of St. Petersburg, Fla., for the past seven years. He enjoyed summer days at Wilson Lake and winter days in St. Petersburg, Fla. He enjoyed flower gardening, playing cards, dancing, ice-skating and water and snow skiing. He especially enjoyed taking all the kids boating and water skiing. He and his wife, the former Rita C. Carignan, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May. He was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church. He was also a member of St. Jean de Baptiste, and the American Legion. He was predeceased by his parents; three sisters; and four brothers. Survivors include his wife of Acton and St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Timothy Legere, his wife, Pamela, and their children, Holly and Jacob, of Bangor; two daughters, Pamela Hamann, her husband, Gerard, and their children, Greg and Tom of New Gloucester; Rolly Boucher, her husband, Marc, and their children, Christine, Jessica and Michael of Hollis; a sister, Jeannette Webber of Acton; a brother-in-law, Rev. Ronald Carignan of Lusaka, Zambia, Africa; and a sister-in-law, Jeannine Tranchemontagne of Alfred. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Ignatius Church. Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery. Arrangements are through the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford.
