MERIDEN, Conn. – Romie Chambers, 91, of 380 Crown St., and husband of 72 years to the late Etta C. Chambers, died Friday, July 13, 2007, with his family at his side at St. Elizabeth Center of the Curtis Home, after a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 30, 1915, in Syrmna Mills, he was the son of the late Avon and Sophie (St. Germaine) Chambers. He had resided in Meriden, Conn., since 1952 and attended schools in Maine. Mr. Chambers was employed by Northern Maine Railroad for 10 years and then was employed by Local 39 of the Union Plumbers. He was a member of Unitarian Universalist Church, Meridan, Conn. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bernie and Lenora Chambers, of Washington, N.H.; son-in-law, Robert Griffin of South Meriden, Conn.; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Newty Chambers of Rockland; cousin, Gerald Stevens of East Hartford, Conn.; several nieces and nephews; and his lifetime friends, Donald and Edna Smith of Meriden, Conn. He was predeceased by a daughter, Carole Griffin; one sister and three brothers. The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, Conn. Burial will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Monday, July 16, at the funeral home.
