BANGOR – Ronald H. Knight, 75, writer and editor in Maine for many years, died April 4, 2006. Ron was born Oct. 28, 1931, in Gorham, the son of Harold E. and Leona M. (Haley) Knight. He attended Brunswick schools, graduating from high school there in 1950. He joined the Navy that year and served aboard the aircraft carriers Tarawa and Wasp during the Korean War. Ron attended the University of Maine, graduating in 1958, with a degree in journalism. After graduation he was editor of the Republican Journal in Belfast until 1961. He then worked on the state and city desks of the Portland Press Herald. In 1965, he joined the public information staff at the University of Maine as a writer and editor. During his years there he traveled extensively to Haiti to report on the university’s involvement in building a faculty at the American University of Les Cayes. In 1974, he was appointed business editor of the American Potato Journal, an international research publication of the potato industry. He played a major role in the reformatting of the publication, which is now published as the American Journal of Potato Research. After retiring from the university in 1991, he wrote and photographed numerous features for the Bangor Daily News. He also did freelance writing and photography for Husson College for two years. He is survived by his wife, Viola E. (Benoit) Knight; three children, Jennifer A. Johnson and husband, Randy, of Hancock Point, David H. Knight and his wife, Rosemary, of Palm City, Fla. and Rachel E. Clifford and her husband, Lawrence, of Portland; four grandchildren, Lydia J. Johnson of Hancock Point and Samantha R. and Daniel H. Knight of Palm City, Fla. and Ava L. Clifford of Portland. At his request funeral services will be private. Those wishing may contribute to the Bangor Public Library.
