PROSPECT – Ruth E. (Cyr) “Mamie” Haley, 86, went to join her husband, Hayward, in Heaven in the early morning of Nov. 30, at a Bangor Hospital, of complications after suffering a broken hip the night before. Ruth was born in Van Buren near the banks of the St. John River, the daughter of Paul V. and Florence (Littlefield) Cyr. When she was two years old, her family moved to Monroe until she was twelve years old. They then moved to Prospect which became her home for the rest of her life. Ruth graduated from Stockton Springs High in 1935 and in 1936, she married Hayward Haley. They had two children, Barbara who lives in Prospect with her husband, Paul Tilley, and a son, Harold, who lives in Monroe with his wife, Susan. In 1950, Ruth started as replacement for Frank Curtis, the Frankfort Postmaster. In 1957, Ruth became Clerk-In-Charge, in 1958 she became Acting Postmaster and in 1960, she received her Commission as Postmaster. Upon retirement of her husband, Ruth resigned her Commission to take care of her husband. In 1978, Hayward died and Ruth dove into the activities of the Frankfort Congregational Church and the Prospect Community Club. These two causes and her love for painting helped see her through her deep loss. As to The Community Club, she became known as the “woman that chases men” to get projects done to the building. She was the President of the Club for many years and was quite the taskmaster to get the improvements done. Ruth belonged to several painting groups over the past years and really enjoyed showing her paintings and was especially proud when she sold some. She has a display of painting books at the Bucksport Library which she donated so that others could use them for reference. She also enjoyed the time spent at Half Moon Pond in the cabin that she and her husband built. Many fond memories were recalled often by her and of the friends they shared the summers with. Ruth is survived by her children, Barbara and Harold, and their spouses; her sister, Arthelene Harriman of Topsham; nephew, Wayne Harriman and wife, Linda, of Topsham; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Hayward; father, Paul Cyr; mother, Florence Ritchie and stepfather, Harold Ritchie; sister, Helen Kirkland; granddaughter, Debbie Valenoti; and grandson, Richard P. Herbest Jr. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 3, at The Frankfort Congregational Church, Frankfort. Burial will be at a later date. You are all invited to join the family in the basement of the Church for conversation and refreshments after the service. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, there will be envelopes at the funeral home with which you can make a donation to either The Frankfort Congregational Church, care of Lawrence Brassbridge, Treasurer, PO Box 38, Frankfort, ME 04438, or to The Prospect Community Club, care of Valery Doody, Treasurer, 477 N. Searsport Road, Prospect, ME 04981. Arrangements by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
