CHEBEAGUE ISLAND – Ruth E. Slowik, 82, a lifelong resident of 39 South Shore Drive, died Aug. 8, 2004, at Island Commons on Chebeague Island, following a brief illness. She was born in Portland, a daughter of Cecil and Nettie Doughty Mansfield. Mrs. Slowik attended school of Chebeague Island, and graduated from Chebeague Island High School. She is a former trustee of the Chebeague Island Hall, currently known as the Chebeague Island Community Center. She was an avid bingo and card player. She also enjoyed dancing and for many years enjoyed doing needlework and knitting. She will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband, John E. Slowik Jr., in 1986; and a daughter, Helen L. Slowik, in 1997. She is survived by a son, Stephen E. Slowik and his wife, Christine, of Hudson; a daughter, Dianne M. Brewer and her husband, Hartley, of Chebeague Island; two granddaughters, Sally L. Brewer and her husband, Keith, of Cumberland, Pamela A. Brewer and her husband, Rich, of Chebeague Island. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chebeague United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Chebeague Island Cemetery. The Chebeague Island Ferry departs Cousins Island at 8:15 a.m. and departs Chebeague Island at 12 noon.
