BANGOR – Ruth F. Epstein, 99, active in family business and Beth Israel Synagogue, passed away March 27, 2004. Ruth was born and raised in Boston, Mass. Ruth was a 1922 graduate of Dorchester High School with high honors. Following graduation, she worked in Boston, Mass., at the Pabst Blue Ribbon sign manufacturing company and quickly rose to the position of general manager. In Boston, Mass., she met and married her beloved husband, Harold R. “Harry” Epstein, owner and proprietor of Epstein’s Department Stores. They were married for nearly 50 years when Harry died in August of 1987. Ruth worked side by side with Harry in the business, first assuming the role of bookkeeper and then becoming the women’s and children’s buyer as the business expanded. Ruth studied French in school and was very fluent. Customers who came from Canada to shop at Epstein’s found this helpful. Ruth was also active with the Congregation Beth Israel Synagogue and was a past president of the Sisterhood as will as participating in many fund raising activities. When her two daughters were growing up, she became a Brownie troop leader and then a Girl Scout leader. Ruth was a keen wit and a wonderful sense of humor. She was an avid reader as well as creative and artistic. Her crocheted handiwork is treasured by many relatives and friends. In her later years, Ruth remained active with Opera New England, receiving a Founder’s Award for promoting the quality of the arts in Maine. She remained mentally alert throughout her long life surprising many with her insights. Ruth leaves two daughters, Gail R. Kansky and her husband, Bernard, of Needham, Mass., and Eleanor B. Israel and her husband, Stanley, of Bangor; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 12 noon, Monday, March 29, at the Levin Chapel in Brookline, Mass., and interment will be at the Hebrew Volin Cemetery in Baker Street, West Roxbury, Mass.
