HARRINGTON – Russell M. Grant, 77, passed away unexpectedly at a Bangor hospital, March 27, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 21, 1926, at Harrington, the son of Merrill and Myra (Wood) Grant. Russ served with the 694th Artillery Battalion in World War II in New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon Islands in the Philippines. His unit received a Unit Citation for outstanding service. After being separated from the service, he attended Gale Institute in Minneapolis, Minn., to become a Telegraphy Operator. He worked for a short time for the Maine Central Railroad as an agent operator. He went to work for the Maine Dept. of Agriculture as a Produce and Branding Law Inspector, retiring in 1980 after more than 32 years of service. After retiring, he owned and operated Dorman Gardens for many years selling produce and plants. Also he was a co-owner of the Wreath Shoppe, a mail order Christmas wreath business. He was a member of the Harrington Fire Department for 18 years, serving as a fire fighter, safety officer and president for many years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and an avid sports fan. He enjoyed local high school sports and played baseball for many years as a pitcher in the Old Seacoast League. He was an avid candlepin bowler at the Eastland Lanes in Ellsworth. He was a member of the American Legion Narraguagus Post No. 8 and a member of the Harrington Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Gwendolyn (Leighton) Grant; his children, Jeanine and her husband, John Allen, of Alexander, Gregory Merrill of Harrington, and Lisa Carver and her husband, Ronald, of Jonesport; four grandchildren, Nathan, Erin and Ian Allen and Terrell Carver; a niece, Louise Giddings of Brewer; and great-nieces, Helena Hunt, Sylvia Libby, Rebecca Pennock and Kara Stanley and families. He was predeceased by his parents, Merrill and Myra Grant in 1980 and 1982 respectfully; a sister, Helen Thompson, in 1998; and a niece, Maxine Young, in 1998. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 29, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at the Harrington Baptist Church, with Pastors Daniel Davis and George Woodward officiating.
