SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Ruth (Gillis) Farrar, 85, died Feb. 20, 2004, at MDI Hospital, after a very short illness. She was born June 8, 1918, in Lubec, the daughter of Allen and Leona (Achorn) Gillis. She was a graduate of Milo High School, Class of 1935. Ruth attended the Bangor School of Commerce and worked toward her degree at the University of Maine in Orono. Started her teaching career at Mount Desert High School in 1939, after two years she went to Stearns High School in Millinocket, where she taught commercial subjects, night school and coached dramatics. She served as head of the Commercial Department for three years before leaving in 1946. She married Norman Farrar in June of 1946, who predeceased her in 1978. For 19 years she worked at the Southwest Boat Corporation, as bookkeeper, secretary and clerk of corporation. In 1966, she went to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, where she worked as the director of finance and credit manager in the business office. She retired in 1981 due to the illness of her twin sister, Margaret, who predeceased her in January 1982. Ruth is survived by many dear friends, and it goes without mention the many relatives of her late husband. Friends may call at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Fernald Funeral Chapel, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Committal services will be held in the spring at Mount Height Cemetery in Southwest Harbor time will be announced.
