GUILFORD – Ruth M. Schultz, 88, died at her home Saturday, March 12, 2005, in Guilford, after a short but painful illness while being attended by her son and daughter-in-law. She was born Aug. 19, 1916, at the home of her great-grandparents, in Carroll, the daughter of Carle and Mattie (King) Monroe. She started school in a one room schoolhouse located at the head of Duck Lake in Lakeville Plantation where she resided at the time. Later she moved with her family to Garland and attended school there until 1932, when she married and moved to Guilford. She lived in Guilford until 1943, when she moved to Sangerville and in 1956 relocated to Wallingford, Conn. She remained in Wallingford until 1990 when she returned to Guilford after the death of her husband. When first married she worked for several years at Hardwood Products Company in Guilford and still fondly remembered many of the women she worked with there. Although she lived in many places her heart seemed to remain in Garland and she always kept in touch throughout her life with many friends and classmates, especially the family of John and Gertrude Olson. In 1938, Henry Curtis, a dear friend and well known local sports writer from Guilford, laid a heavy burden on her when he turned her into a rabid “Red Sox” fan. From that point on she rarely missed a broadcast if she could pick it up on the radio and was able to attend many games at Fenway while her “super hero” Ted Williams was still playing. She never gave up on her “Sox” no matter how bad things were going and swore she would live to see them win a World Series, no matter how long it took. A walking encyclopedia of knowledge, she was still doing the New York Times crossword puzzles with a pen until three months ago when her eyesight failed. She was also a merciless Scrabble and Skip-Bo player. She is survived by her son, Sieferd C. and his wife, Madeline, of Guilford; her son, Nolan T. of Meriden, Conn., her son, Alan C. of Monroe; a brother, Nolan of North Carolina; a grandson, Bruce Schultz, address unknown; and three granddaughters, Melissa Espinosa of East Haddam, Conn., Charlene Lukasivics of Newtown Sq., Pa., and Erica Schultz, address unknown; stepgranddaughters, Cindy White of Guilford, Pami Hall of Brewer and Heidi Dellaire of Gardiner; four great-grandchildren; a special sister-in-law, Marjorie Bullard of Guilford. She also had a very close and special relationship with seven nephews, Eric Nesbit, and Kerry, Lance, Dane, Scott, Shawn, and Kyle Monroe; and a special friend, Lois Jackson of Belfast. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Sieferd B. Schultz; four brothers, Lyle, Max, Larry, and Derry Monroe; one sister, Rena Kozak; a special sister-in-law, Lucille Monroe; her beloved grandson, Alan T. Schultz; and her stepgrandson, Scott R. Willey; a special and very dear friend, Gretchen True. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 21 Oak St., Guilford. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home, with Pastor A. Maurice Neal officiating. Spring burial will be in the Sangerville Village Cemetery.
