PORTLAND and HOULTON – S. Jennie McCarthy, 84, passed away Aug. 1, 2004, at a Portland healthcare facility. She was born Nov. 8, 1919, at Woodstock, N.B., Canada, the daughter of Robert S. S. and Birdie E. (Edwards) Welch. Jennie attended Woodstock schools and graduated from Carleton County Vocational School. She married Justin Frederick “Freddie” McCarthy in 1943 and moved to Houlton where she lived most of her remaining years. She was a stay-at-home mom until her husband passed away in 1969. She worked in the cafeteria at Houlton Elementary School from 1971 to 1981 where she was known as the “Dessert Lady”. After her husband’s death, playing cards was her passion. She played three afternoons a week with different groups and would play on the spur of the moment with anyone who would play with her. It didn’t matter what the game, she was willing and she was always incredibly lucky. She was known as “Nanny Jennie” by many of the children who attended her daughter Carol’s daycare. Jennie is survived by one son, Wayne McCarthy and his wife, Margaret “Peg”, of East Rochester, N.Y.; two daughters, Carol Blake and her husband, Richard, of Gorham, Susan Clifford and her husband, Glen, of North Amity; 10 grandchildren, five great- grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Freddie; two children, an infant daughter and her youngest son, Robert “Bobby” McCarthy; her sisters, Alice McCrea, Hazel Welch and Faye Gillard; and a special cousin, Robert Pearman. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
