BANGOR – Sewall Melvin Brown, 87, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, from complications of congestive heart failure. Melvin, as he was known, was born Sept. 6, 1919, the second son of Lena (Deitz) Brown and Leo Brown. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1937 and from Dalhousie University Dental School, Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1945. He practiced orthodontics in Brooklyn, N.Y., 1945-1950 and returned to Maine in 1950, opening his first office in Waterville. He subsequently opened offices in Augusta and Bangor, and practiced orthodontics in these three locations until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement from dentistry, he did real estate and property management work. For the past several years, he had been wintering in Lake Worth, Fla., and spending his summers in Maine. He married Jean Walzer in 1956, who predeceased him in 1994. He is survived by his brother, Edwin Brown of Niskayuna, N.Y.; three sons, Ron of Biddeford, Lawrence of Manlius, N.Y., and Peter of Tempe, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and his companion of many years, Jane Binder of Lake Worth, Fla. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Congregation Beth El.
