HERMON – Sandra J. Pratt, 61, wife of Virgil “Gil” Pratt, died July 31, 2007, at her home with her husband and her daughter by her side, of complications after a nine-year battle with colon cancer. She was born July 19, 1946, in Dover-Foxcroft, the daughter of Gladys (French) Huntington and the late Howard E. Huntington. Sandy attended schools in Dover-Foxcroft, graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1964 in the top 10 of her class, and received the coveted Rose Award for academic achievement. She was a graduate of the University of Maine and had the proud distinction of graduating along with her daughter in the Class of 1991. Sandy and Gil were married Sept. 14, 1968, at Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church, and began an incredible adventure through life together. She started working for New England Telephone while still in high school in 1964 at Dover-Foxcroft, and when the Dover office closed in 1974, she transferred to Bangor. Sandy held many positions with New England Telephone, Nynex, Bell Atlantic and Verizon and she retired in July 1998, after 34 years of service. She was a lifelong member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a 33-year member of IBEW, Local 2327. Sandy was happiest when helping others and she was instrumental in forming the Kiwanianne Club of Brewer, and served as president in 1987-88. In September 1998, a month after her retirement, Sandy was diagnosed with colon cancer and after treatment she went to work at University of Maine Alumni Association as their receptionist, a job she cherished for the many wonderful friendships with co-workers and fellow alumni. She was forced to retire in 2003 due to her declining health. Sandy enjoyed traveling and along with her husband, Gil, she visited many of the national parks around the country and most of the states. She was always learning new crafts and was particularly fond of crocheting intricate doilies as gifts for family and friends. As a young girl, she learned the art of cro-cheting from her grandmother. She was an avid Maine hockey fan who rarely missed a home game and enjoyed following the Black Bears as they trav-eled around the country. Sandy was an incredibly kind and generous person, a de-voted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, and she will be greatly missed by her fam-ily and her many friends. She is survived by her equally devoted and loving husband of nearly 39 years, Virgil “Gil” Pratt; her daughter, Judith Pratt Morrison and her husband, David, of Bangor; and her very special grandsons, Joseph Patrick and Daniel William Morrison. A beloved sister-in-law, Maggie McKinney of Manchester; brothers-in-law, Stephen Pratt and his wife, Jane, of Dover-Foxcroft, and Thomas Pratt and his wife, Angie, of Greenville Junction, also survive her. She is also survived by her mother, Gladys Huntington of Dover-Foxcroft; and her sisters and their husbands, Linda and Bruce Cohen of Somerville, Mass., and Rita and Jasper Farrington of Pittsfield; many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, and a lifetime of friends. She also leaves two special aunts, Dorothy Anderson and Evelyn Higgins of Dover-Foxcroft, who have supported her during this difficult time. The family acknowledges with our most heartfelt thanks all the wonderful people at Eastern Maine Medical Center, CancerCare of Maine, and several Bangor-area Hospice organizations that worked together with skill and compassion to help us through this difficult time. Visiting hours will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Lary Funeral Home, 62 Summer St., Dover-Foxcroft. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at United Methodist Church, 156 East Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Dr. Dodie Sheffield officiating. Friends are invited to join the family for conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at Harter Hall at the church. A burial service will be held at a later date in the family lot at South Dover Cemetery. Contributions in her memory can be made to The Good Samaritan Agency, Adoption Services, 100 Ridgewood Drive, Bangor, ME 04401.
