BELMONT, Mass. – Sandy died peacefully on March 7, 2005, after a long and heroic battle with conditions stemming from her childhood diabetes. Sandy was born July 3, 1951, in Worcester, Mass., where she grew up. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., and a master’s in education from Boston University. She did additional graduate studies in fine arts at California State University at Fullerton and non-profit management at New York University. She was a special education teacher at Winchester High School, an adjunct professor of writing at Fullerton Community College, and was executive director of the Bridgeport, Conn., affiliate of Literacy Volunteers. She had a rich creative life as a visual artist and writer. She was a painter with exhibited works at juried shows at Brea Arts Center, Brea, Calif., and the DeCordova School, Lincoln, Mass. She was a teacher of writing fiction and organizer of writer support groups. Sandy loved walks and meditation in tranquil settings in nature. Her favorite place in the world was Naskeag Point, in Brooklin, Maine. Sandy was the devoted wife for 32 years to Dr. Barry Barresi of Belmont, Mass., the devoted sister to Dr. Cheryl Brown of Belmont, Frances Brown of Worcester, Mass. and Donald Brown of Holden, Mass. She will be sorely missed by her 12 nieces and nephews. She was the daughter-in-law of Mrs. Louise Barresi of Fort Kent.
