MILFORD – Sandra “Sandy” W. (Laskey) Drennen, 67, crossed the portals of heaven to join her Lord and Savior Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at a Baltimore hospital. She was met at the gate with the open arms of her beloved and predeceased parents, Samuel H. and Grace H. (Wickett) Laskey; and a brother, Samuel H. Laskey Jr. Sandy fought a courageous battle with breast cancer and acute leukemia. Because of her unshakeable faith, she did not fear death and she passed away peacefully. Sandy was born June 1, 1939, in Old Town. She graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1957. In December 1958, she married Donald R. Drennen, of Oak Hill, W.Va., and they moved to Maryland, where they raised two daughters, Dawn and Shirley. Sandy returned to Old Town in 1977 and became employed by University of Maine – Orono, where she worked for 27 3/4 years, until her retirement June 2004. She worked in the Office of Institutional Studies as a data processing coordinator. She loved her job and the faculty across campus became her second family. During the course of her employment, she received awards for Excellence of Service to the University and for Service Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. She made many close friends while working there. Sandy was a life-long learner who loved to study. She graduated from University of Maine – Orono, cum laude in 1995, at the age of 57. In her senior year she received the Presidential Academic Achievement Award. Her daughters, grandchildren and son-in-law were her life and she loved each one of them dearly and uniquely. That love and the precious memories of all the wonderful moments she shared with them will be carried with her throughout eternity. Sandy loved to attend Bible study, read, crochet, dine out, play cards and visit her sister, brother-in-law and nieces in Lincoln. Sandra is survived and will be immensely missed by her daughter, Dawn K. Drennen of Alexandria, Va.; daughter, Shirley A. Mitchell and her husband, Michael, of Greenbush; and grandchildren, Nichole Mitchell and Michael Mitchell II, both of Portland. In addition, she is survived by four brothers, three sisters and their spouses, Henry Laskey and his wife, Doris, of Winthrop, Thomas Laskey, of Woodstock, Conn., Harold Laskey and his wife, Donna, of Old Town, Douglas Laskey and his wife, Louise, of Atlanta, Mae Goodin, of Pensacola, Fla., Sylvia Weatherbee and her husband, Robert, of Lincoln, Shirley Folsom of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Lincoln. She had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She will also be missed by her best friends of many years, namely, Judy Kimball, Pat Duplissa and Al Pelletier. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A celebration of her life will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, 744 Stillwater Ave., Old Town, with Pastor Ron Chaffee officiating. In lieu of flowers, Sandy requested if one chooses, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086 or to a charity of one’s choice. Interment will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town, at a later date.
