ELLSWORTH – Sharon “Sam” Alice Piper, 61, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at a Bangor hospital, after a short illness. She was born Aug. 16, 1945, in Union, the daughter of Roland Grandville and Evelyn May (Smith) Miller. She enjoyed playing pool and singing Patsy Cline songs. The last several years she enjoyed traveling around the country with her husband to national softball tournaments and national Elks conventions with her many friends. She went to many Elks functions around the state. She never had an unkind word of anyone and made friends with everyone she met. She was the first to offer her help at these functions and with fundraising. She moved to Ellsworth in the early ’70s with her first husband, Gerald Payson. She worked at the McAualy Woolen Mill for several years and then at Maine Shellfish Co., as a secretary. She worked for the Maine State Liquor store for 20 years, becoming manager the year before they closed. The last few years she had been employed as a driver for Carquest Auto Parts. She was a charter member of the Greater Ellsworth Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and was the treasurer for this organization. She is survived by her loving husband, Donald Piper of Ellsworth; four sisters, Brenda and her husband, Ronald Jackson, of South Thomaston, Sylvia and her husband, David Hart, of Chesapeake, Va., Winona and her husband, Jesse Johnson, of Waldoboro and Janet Cunningham of Milo; her mother-in-law, Adah M. Piper of Hancock; her true and loving friends, Claire Brown of Zephyrhills, Fla., Marilyn Sincyr of Ellsworth, Greg and Barbara Daniels of Presque Isle and all of her friends in Elkdom will miss her. She was predeceased by her parents. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Ellsworth Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elks National Foundation, in Sharon’s name, care of the Ellsworth Elks Lodge, P.O. Box 85, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
